Bayswater

Bayswater is one of London’s most cosmopolitan areas with the significant diversity of the local population added to by having one of London’s biggest concentration of hotels. The names derives from Bayard’s Watering, a place where the Westbourne stream crossed Bayswater Road. The name is possibly based on the Bayard Family who once lived in the are. The area is now well known for Samuel Pepys Cockerell stucco houses in crescents and squares. Notably, there is a significant Arab population towards Edgware Road, a large number of Americans, a substantial Greek community attracted by London’s Greek Orthodox Cathedral, the area is also a centre of London’s Brazilian community and a substantial local population.

Whitechapel

Whitechapel is a rapidely changing area in East London. Famous for a poverty striken history and intrisically linked to Jack the Ripper and the Elephant Man. The “Elephant Man”, Joseph Carey Merrick (1862-1890) was exhibited in a shop on the Whitechapel Road before being helped by Dr Frederick Treves (1853-1923) at the Royal London Hospital, opposite the actual shop. There is a museum in the hospital about his life. The area still remains thoroughly working class and the Bangladeshis are the most visible migrant group there today. Whitechapel is home to many aspiring artists and shoestring entrepreneurs.

Clerkenwell

In the 17th century Clerkenwell became a fashionable place of residence. Oliver Cromwell owned a house on Clerkenwell Close, just off the Green. The Industrial Revolution changed the area greatly. It became a centre for breweries, distilleries and the printing industry. It gained an especial reputation for the making of clocks and watches. Clerkenwell was once known as London’s “Little Italy” due to its extensive Italian population from the 1850s to the 1960s.

Canary Wharf

It is an area of social extremes, with some of the most expensive and luxurious housing and offices, whilst Blackwall is the 81st poorest ward in England out of over 8000. Canary Wharf was the site of the highest concentration of council housing in England.

The city of London is a geographically mall city within Greater London. It is the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern congrubation grew. The City’s boundaries have remained constant since the middle ages. Today this are is a major business and commercial centre.
