Shanghai, according to the UN is the eight fastest-growing city in the world. Shanghai’s economy is growing and the city continues to build themed satellite towns, new tube-line and built over 10,000 skyskcrapers in the last 10 years. It is now one of the financial centers in the world. Shanghai only recently has become a more diverse society with only 0.7% of its population born outside China. Population growth is driven by migrant workers who meet the demand for low-wage labour. These “floating workers” often live in makeshift accommodation, lack official status and thus access to social services and test the city’s capacity for social integration.
Shanghai now is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world, with over 20 million people and in 2005 Shanghai became the world’s largest cargo port.
